MARCH 2021 - PRESENT DAY MEDICAL HARDWARE START UP
Using the iterative power of industrial design to create a modular system with high caliber aesthetics for upper extremity terminal devices. Aion bridges the divide between advanced grips and body-powered terminal devices. AION was founded by myself and 3 others.
Our mission at AION is making a terminal device that can replace the hook hand instantly. This is because today we are seeing a lot of prosthetic hands that are extremely advanced and expensive but the realitiy is that this advanced technology is not making amputees lives easier. The price is inhibiting peoples lives and so are the devices themselves.
In most of these cases, amputees prefer the hook hand to anything else. A device that hasn't changed since WW2, but even these devices cost 900 dollars for something that simple. However these products cause social issues and many would rather not wear it due to being looked at differently.
On top of that the 100,000 dollar products do not consider simple things like comfort and use into their designs. These devices struggle to hold down pieces of bread or pick up precision items and these problems are not based on one product but persist across the entire marketof terminal devices. So much so that 65 percent of upper arm amputees choose to go without a prosthetic.
In a matter of four short months myslef and my team has developed a working prototype. The prototype has a system of pullyes and hand to replace the hook almost instantly. this provides a five finger grip that alloows the holding of cylindrical objects and a more natural hand exprience.
Derek is a bi-literal amputee and has been a pivitol role in the development of Aion. As we co-design with Derek we will continue to adapt and change the buisness, product, and ecosystem for all amputees.
